Earlier this week, the Teen Read Award Launch was hosted by Brentford School for Girls, with pupils from across the borough attending.

Students were joined by Author Sue Wallman, who is known for writing titles such as ‘Lying about Last Summer’, ‘See How They Lie and ‘Your Turn to Die’.

Amongst the topics the author discussed with the pupils in attendance were “all things thriller books” and about the publishing world.

Ms Wallman had a lot of insight to provide about the tumultuous journey to get published, as hers took eight years.

In 2013, she won The Women's Prize for Fiction First Chapter Award, then her debut ‘Lying About last Summer’ was published in 2016.

The Hounslow Teen Read sees year 10 students given six books to read over the next four months. At the end of the period, they will select their favourite.

Their chosen favourite will then be submitted to the borough, to help vote for the ultimate Hounslow ‘Teen Read’.

After the event, the author responded to a Tweet which shared an image of her speaking at the event, as shown above.

She said: “I can confirm that 1) this was a fabulous event with a really warm atmosphere and 2) contrary to what this photo might lead you to believe, I did have my eyes open some of the time."

“Thank you @HounslowSLS and @brentfordschool for hosting- and to everyone there”.

The six books that have been shortlisted for the Hounslow Teen Read 2023 are:

Grow by Luke Palmer
The Hideaway by Pam Smy
The Secrets Act by Alison Weatherby
Lionheart Girl by Yaba Badoe
The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros
The Upper World by Femi Fadugba
