Oxbridge Seminars

As part of the Newnham programme, students of Brentford 6th Form had the opportunity to attend a variety of short Oxbridge style seminars, as part of a conference held at Epsom Racecourse, Surrey. The students selected seminars from a range of courses including Medicine, Engineering, English, Geography, Psychology and Humanities. Alongside subject courses, there were also sessions on how to write competitive applications and all about student life at Oxford and Cambridge University. The seminars gave a good insight into the courses, giving us clear information about the course structures, entry requirements and common misconceptions about the subjects.

The students described how they were able to explore courses within the field of science that could follow their A Levels currently studied. One student found Bio-medical Science fascinating, which previously, was never a consideration. Overall, the conference helped all the students re-focus on where they want to be, and how they could get there. There was quite a variety of subjects, so they all had something they found interest in. It allowed all of them to think carefully about their futures at university. As Samira stated “It put things into perspective as the sessions showed me that anyone can get into the top universities if they work hard; the reputation of top universities is worse than the reality.
