STEM in action: Brentford girls explore real-world careers

From classroom learning to career discovery, Year 9 students gained valuable insight into the real-world impact of STEM.

Brentford School for Girls continues to bring learning to life beyond the classroom. From Monday 18th May to Wednesday 20th May, fifteen highly motivated Year 9 students were selected to participate in an inspiring three-day STEM Insights Programme. The initiative gave students brilliant hands-on exposure to rapidly growing industries across science, technology, engineering, and maths. Run in partnership with the Youth Career Collective, students focused on intensive career exploration on Monday, spent Tuesday on the project, and wrapped up their fantastic experiences on Wednesday.

The standout moment of the three days was a special off-site visit to the West Middlesex Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre in Middlesex. Students stepped out of their regular routines to observe real-world STEM applications in a busy, working healthcare environment. This incredible opportunity allowed them to see exactly how professionals use technology and science to solve complex problems every day.

Immersive experiences like this aim to build student confidence and raise their career aspirations. By showing young women the practical impact of STEM roles, the school hopes to inspire the next generation of engineers, technicians, and medical professionals.

‘‘Visiting the diagnostic centre showed us how the science we learn in class actually helps people in real life,’’ shared one participating Year 9 student. ‘‘It gave me so much confidence to think about a career in healthcare technology that I hadn't even considered before.’’

Staff were equally thrilled with the outcomes of the three-day event.

‘‘Opportunities like the STEM Insights Programme are vital for our students,’’ noted a member of the teaching staff at Brentford School for Girls. ‘‘By working alongside the Youth Career Collective, we can provide practical, hands-on learning that bridges the gap between school subjects and future career pathways. It is wonderful to see the girls return to the classroom feeling so inspired.’’

‘‘As careers leader, I am passionate about creating opportunities that help students see the real relevance of what they learn in the classroom,’’ said Megan Croft, Careers Leader at Brentford School for Girls. ‘‘Programmes like this open students’ eyes to the wide range of careers available to them and show that STEM is not only exciting, but full of possibilities for their future.’’

As these 15 students return to their regular studies, they bring a renewed sense of purpose and excitement to their future career goals. Brentford School for Girls remains proud to offer these rich, external opportunities, ensuring students are prepared not just for their exams, but for successful and fulfilling futures.

Parents, carers and members of the local community are also warmly invited to attend the school’s upcoming Arts Festival on the 25th June 2026, where they can come together to celebrate the creativity, talent and achievements of Brentford School for Girls students.
