Brentford School for Girls (BSfG) is demonstrating its unwavering commitment to student achievement with the ongoing Power Hour programme, designed to support Year 11 students as they prepare for their GCSE examinations.
Launched in January, this eight-week initiative provides structured, evidence-based revision clinics aimed at equipping students with the skills, strategies, and confidence they need to excel. The sessions, running after school from 3:10 to 4:00pm, are built on research-backed strategies recommended by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). These include retrieval practice to enhance long-term memory, exam question modelling to improve technique, and small-group teaching to address specific learning gaps. The programme also incorporates metacognitive strategies to help students plan, monitor, and review their revision effectively.
Assistant Headteacher Megan Croft, who is leading the initiative, highlights the importance of the programme: “At BSfG, the success of our students is at the heart of everything we do. The Power Hour programme is designed to provide targeted, impactful support that makes a real difference in their exam preparation. We are proud to offer a structured and engaging approach that helps students feel confident and ready for their GCSEs.’’
The Power Hour sessions offer a variety of activities tailored to meet the diverse needs of students, including:
- Exam question clinics: Focused on improving technique and understanding exam expectations
- Teacher-led modelling: Demonstrating worked examples to build confidence
- Retrieval and revision activities: Strengthening core knowledge and long-term memory
- Small-group support: Providing targeted help for specific gaps identified through mock exam results
- Grade 8/9 support: Offering additional challenges for high-achieving students aiming for top grades. To ensure students remain focused and energised, refreshments are provided at each session, and attendance is closely monitored. Parents and carers are encouraged to support their children’s participation, as consistent attendance is key to maximising the benefits of the programme.
A Year 11 student shared their experience, saying, “So super helpful, went through an exam paper thoroughly at the perfect pace. We were able to see how to answer exam questions to get the top marks (especially useful as it helped us prepare for our upcoming test). It was really helpful to go through a walking talking mock. I have a much better understanding on how to answer questions. We have extra time to revise topics we are weak in.’’
Croft emphasises the collaborative effort required for success, stating, “When schools and families work together, students achieve more. We are grateful for the support of parents and carers in helping us make the Power Hour a success for every student.’’
A parent shared their gratitude, saying, “Thank you for your outstanding efforts in delivering the Power Hour programme and for the continuous support you provide to Year 11 students. We truly appreciate your dedication and the positive impact you are making on their exam preparation.’’
BSFG’s dedication to student success is grounded in its vision to foster learners who are confident, independent, and capable. As the school states, “Imagine the future Brentford Girl; she thrives on challenge and has a desire to fulfill her learning potential; she is able to think independently and is confident in her social and academic capability.” The ongoing efforts around exam preparation, including the Power Hour programme, directly reflect this commitment to helping every student reach their full potential. The Power Hour programme is a testament to the school’s commitment to going above and beyond to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.
